In total,the Taj Mahal took 23 years to complete.By the time the Taj was finished,Shah Jahan had spent so much money that his country had grown poor.He fell from power and was overthrown by his son ,who imprisoned him.


But even in prison ,Shah Jahan was able to keep his love for Mumtaz in his heart.His son had made sure that his prison window overlooked the Taj Mahal.He spent the rest of his life gazing out at the Yaj and remembering his beloved wife.


His last wish was to be buried in the Taj beside Mumtaz,and his son fulfilled this reqeust. They are still there to this day,together forever in a building that celebrates their love.


While there are many great monuments in the world,the Taj Mahal was truly built out of love.Shah Jahan gave up everything to commemorate the beauty of his wife and strength of their passion.Today, millions of people come to see the Taj Mahal every year,and are moved by the feelings that inspired it.

One day , Shah Jahan heard about a rebellion against him. He immediately led his armies to fight against the rebels.His wife insisted on coming with him,even though she was pregnant and the journey would be difficult.Sadly,she died giving birth during the travels


When the Shah found out about this,he was heartbroken.His love for Mumtaz was so strong that in the months following her death his hair turned completely white.He felt that he had to find a way to make their love last forever.


He thought that the best way to do so would be to build a magnificent tomb.They could be buried there together,and their love would be remembered through its beauty.


The Shah went all over India to find the best marble jewels.He bought so much that it took 1000 elephants to carry it all.Great artists were hired from all over the world to work on the tomb. The Shah told them to design the Taj in the shape of a rose,since that was Mumtaz's favorite flower.

The Taj Mahal is one of the most incredible buildings in the world.Located in Agra,India,it's famous for its beautiful inlays and white marble towers.Everyone can appreciate the beauty of the Taj Mahal,but did you know that it was build for love?

In 1627,India was ruled by the Mughals,a Muslim people from Mongolia.They were very powerful,and even called their leader Shah Jahan,which means "The King of the World."The Shah's wife was the most beautiful woman in India.He called her Mumtaz Mahal,which means "The Jewel of the Palace."

Shah Jahan was madly in love with his wife,and would do anything for her.He gave her gold and diamonds,and granted her every request.She accompanied him everywhere,even when he went to war.The people also loved her because she had such a compassionate heart,giving money to widows and orphans.When poor people came to appeal to the king,she would convince her husband to help them.
